Movie Review : 'Kumki' - visually evocative

Film : " Kumki"
Actors : Vikram Prabhu, Lakshmi Menon, Thambi Ramaiah and Asvin Raja
Director : Prabhu Solomon
Rating : ***1/2

After the critically acclaimed "Mynaa", filmmaker Prabhu Solomon returns with an equally uplifting film, in which an elephant plays the eponymous character. " Kumki" is the kind of film that reminds us yet again that we don't need hero-worshipping scripts anymore to draw audiences to the cinemas.

Set in the backdrop of forests of Kerala and Karnataka, Prabhu paints a simple love story that instantaneously strikes a chord with the audience.

The film takes us through the lives of the farmers in a village called Aadi Kadu, where a wild elephant called Komban, has been causing havoc for many years. From bringing down huts and destroying plantation, the elephant eventually goes to the extent of crushing few villagers. The villagers unanimously decide to hire a mahout and a Kumki elephant, which are trained to fend off wild elephants.

Cut to next scene, Bomman and his elephant come to offer their service and they're treated with utmost respect in return by the villagers. Meanwhile, Bomman falls in love with Alli, daughter of the village chief. Over the course of the events, the lives of Bomman, Alli and the elephant are changed forever. What really happens in their lives, forms the rest of the story.

Prabhu interconnects two stories together to form an arching bigger story that never in its running time, deviates from its destined path. It might have taken some great deal of time to arrive at the conclusion, but never did it deviate. The crux of the film is about how a trained elephant is called upon to save the villagers from wild elephants, while the two other sub-plots are that of the relationship between Bomman, his elephant and Alli.

Though the film progresses at average pace, but thanks to an engaging and highly entertaining cast, the audience are kept hooked to their seats. Debutant Vikram Prabhu as the lovestruck mahout is brilliant and bereft of any criticism. Lakshmi, after her satisfying performance in "Sundarapandian", steals the limelight with her innocent character.

Unlike other Tamil films, there are no separate comedy tracks here. Thambi Ramaiah and Asvin, along with Vikram, bring the house down with hilarious one-liners. The relationship between Thambi and Vikram may appear wafer thin, as most of the time Vikram is seen verbally abusing his uncle, but it's not until the climax that we get to understand the depth of their relationship.

The locations are out of this world and I don't remember seeing anything as visually engrossing in the recent past. Be it the mountains in the background or the greenery spread across the village or the dense forests, everything in the film won't go unnoticed.

In a long time, I felt the music in a film was very apt and the songs were suitably placed. Immam's music is highly melodious and works beautifully in the favour of the film. This may very well be his best work to date.

" Kumki" may not be the year's best film, but definitely can't be looked down upon.

I was expecting problem for 'Midnight's Children': Deepa Mehta

Mumbai, Dec 15 : Deepa Mehta, whose earliers films "Fire", "Water" and "1947: Earth" got into a severe censorial crisis, is pinching herself in disbelief over the all clear that her latest film "Midnight's Children" was given by the Central Board of Film Certification in India.

The film, an adaptation of controversial author Salman Rushdie's 1980 Booker Prize-winning book of the same name, was cleared by the censors Wednesday, without a single cut.

Mehta, who was all set for a prolonged battle to preserve her footage from any sign of desecration, is over the moon.

"After the unnecessary controversies, I was kind of expecting some kind of problem. But the censor board was exceptionally fair. They didn't cut a single shot of my film," she said.

"Of course they gave it an 'A' certificate. That's fine. 'Midnight's Children' is not meant for children. But the fact that an adult audience is being treated as a mature viewership is a sign of the changes that are creeping slowly but surely into the Indian socio-political framework," she added.

Now after the censorial clearance, PVR Pictures, the Indian distributors of "Midnight's Children" are said to have decided to dub the film into Hindi before its release towards January 2013 end.

To this, Mehta said: "I leave these matters to my very capable distributors. I am just happy that my film would be seen uncut in India."

Jab Tak Hai Jaan Movie Review

Jab Tak Hai Jaan Filem ReviewConclusion :

The film is more like a tribute to the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra as this was his last. While the first half goes about smoothly with few elements of comedy, romance, songs it is the second half which gets into the emotional angle. The film would have been excellent had the length been reduced. Nearly thirty minutes of the film was not required. Moreover, few scenes didn’t have that fizz in them. Overall, this is a film which must be watched purely for the performances and the respect for Yash Ji as a filmmaker.  At the box office, this will definitely be a hit but it may not be a blockbuster.

Bharatstudent Verdict : Romantic, conventional, touching but very dragging

Devaraya Movie Review

Devaraya Movie ReviewMovie Review : Devaraya
Rating : 1.5 / 5
Banner : Sunray International, Nanigadi Cinema
Cast : Srikanth, Meenakshi Dixit, Vidisha, M S Narayana, Ranganath, Balayya, Jayaprakash Reddy, Jeeva, Sivajiraja, Radha Kumari and Others
Music : Chakri
Cinematographer : Poorna
Producer: Nani Krishna, Kiran Jakkamsetty
Director: Nani Krishna
Released Date: December 07, 2012 Devaraya Tollywood Movie ReviewStory:
An unconvincing tale, the story begins with Dorababu (srikanth) who has all bad habits but has a good heart. He lives in a village in Godavari district. Here comes Swapna (vidisha) a well educated girl and Dorababu decides to have her. But he is unable to do for some reason and meanwhile Swapna falls in love with him. The village has an old temple and this is sighted by the bad guys who want to set up a cement factory. But there is a strong connection between that temple and Dorababu. What is that connection and what happens after forms the rest of the story.Devaraya Telugu Cinema ReviewPresentation:
The director has come up with a good storyline with an interesting message and while the presentation was good, the narrative was poor.  The dialogues were not heavy, the script was hardly appealing and the screenplay was weak. The background score was effective but songs were not so.  Cinematography was the icing on the cake. Editing was required at few places. Costumes were well designed and natural while the art department was rich. Srikanth has given a committed performance and he was upto the mark in his double role. Meenakshi Dixit is mindblowing hot and sexy, she needs to get more chances. Vidisha was glamorous enough. Jayaprakash Reddy was usual. Ranganath was matured. M S Narayana, Jeeva and others were there to fill the screen. Balaiah was elegant. Devaraya Filem ReviewConclusion:
Looking at the title many will expect the film to contain some truths about the historical King Krishnadevaraya but it is not so. This is a total fiction story. While the first half goes on a lighter note with elements of romance, comedy, songs etc the second half is the place where the real plot comes into picture and it ends with a melodrama and sentiment angle. Overall, this is a film which has a very good idea but it was not shaped up well so success is difficult at the box office.

Son of Sardaar Movie Review

Son of Sardaar Filem ReviewConclusion :

The film is the remake of the Telugu bumper hit ‘Maryada Ramanna’ and the entire concept has been shifted barring the change in backdrop. While the first half goes on an entertaining note with elements of song, romance and comedy the second half gets into an emotional twist. There is some melodrama but the penultimate sequences are quite exciting. Overall, this is a film which would be a treat for all masala action lovers and it has good chances of scoring success at the box office.

Bharatstudent Verdict : Well made remake, entertainment with masala action

Sanjay sports short hair, styled beard for 'Zanjeer'

New Delhi, Dec 15 : Sanjay Dutt has opened up to a lot of experimentation with his looks. After sporting a bald look in " Agneepath", and wearing a turban in " Son Of Sardaar", the actor will be seen in short hair and a stylish beard for his role as Sher Khan in "Zanjeer".

He will also be seen wearing kolh-rimmed eyes in the movie, which is a remake of the 1973 film of the same name.

Sanjay plays the role that veteran actor Pran had played in the original.

Director Apoorva Lakhia, who has taken the reigns of the remake in his hands, sat down himself to design Sanjay's look.

He roped in designer Navin Shetty for the costume, and popular hair stylist Aalim's team for the actor's hair, said a source.

The year has been good for the actor with " Agneepath", which won him rave reviews for his spine-chilling portrayal of Kancha Cheena, and "Son Of Sardaar" painted a completely different picture of Sanjay in his humourous avatar.

The "Zanjeer" remake also stars southern star Ram Charan and Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra.

Produced by Reliance Entertainment, Amit Mehra and Flying Turtle Films, "Zanjeer" will release April 12, 2013.

Gun control need of the hour in US: Indian celebs

Mumbai, Dec 15 : Indian film celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Shekhar Kapur,w who frequently visit the US for film shooting, mourned the death of those killed in the horrifying mass shootings and said the country's government needs to give serious thought to gun regulation.

As many as 28 people, including 18 children, were killed at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, about 60 miles northeast of New York Friday.

The shooting appeared to be the nation's second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, in which 32 people, including two Indians, were killed and 17 others wounded.

Here's what the celebrities tweeted:

Amitabh Bachchan: Atrocious! Saddened beyond grief! Just cannot believe that a human can possess such a sick demented mind! Prayers for families. Gun control? Try getting it passed in the Senate - it shall be gunned down.

Shekhar Kapur: Heart goes out to parents and families of children who died in Connecticut.

Karan Johar: Shocked and appalled at the massacre in Connecticut. Prayers to the families who bear this tragic loss and Proactivity to America.

Kunal Kohli: If guns are sold they will be used. Too many times have too many innocents died. The gun lobby still think they're living in the Wild West? The US has to relook and change their gun laws. These killings have to stop. It's sad meaningless and ridiculous. Guns can't be sold to anyone.

Sanjay Gupta: What can be more ridiculous than this statistic? US has more retail gun stores 51,438 than grocery stores 36,569.

Neha Dhupia: Its unimaginable to see what's happened in Newtown, Connecticut . Strength to each one who has lost their loved ones.

Manoj Bajpayee: Sad news from US, it is atrocious that guns are so comfortably available to a 20-year-old. My heart goes out to those who lost their little ones.

Farhan Akhtar: Deepest sympathies to the families of all the innocent lives lost in Connecticut. Our thoughts are with you.

Ehsaan Noorani: Gun control is the need of the hour. Each little soul cries out.

Ritesh Sidhwani: Shocked and Saddened to hear about the shooting in a Elementary school in Connecticut. What is this world coming to. My heart goes out to the grieving parents of the little angels.

Kabir Khan: How many school kids will be gunned down before the US begins gun regulation? It's like their foreign policy - the wrong guys are given guns.

Shruti Haasan: So sad and disturbed this morning to hear about the shooting in Connecticut, little kids. This is just so sad, prayers to their families.

Jackky Bhagnani: Shameful at what happened at Connecticut. A complete inhuman act. Prayers for all the children who ended their life before even starting it.

Farah Khan Ali: A society that attacks innocent children is a doomed society wherever and whichever country it maybe. Children are reflection of God.

Neerparavai Movie Review

I approve my films' final cut: Salman Khan

Mumbai, Dec 15 : Actor Salman Khan has been delivering back-to-back hits in the Hindi film industry. He says after the failure of his 2010 film "Veer", he makes sure the final cut of any of his films has his approval.

He feels an actor's involvement in creative processes helps sometimes.

"When I put my foot down sometimes, I hope I am not taking advantage of my stardom and that's a big guilt. Eventually, what the audience first watches is only me in the poster, so I will be held responsible for everything," Salman said here in an interaction.

"So we also have to see that in just being polite, the film doesn't go for a toss. Aamir (Khan) does it very correctly. Now I have started making it clear right in the beginning. I make sure that the final cut goes with my approval. After 'Veer', I have started doing this," he said.

Salman, who wrote the story for "Veer", admits he wasn't satisfied with the final product that the film turned out to be.

"I was not happy with 'Veer' when they showed me the film. I cut down the film to one hour and 55 minutes, and eventually they released the film as a two hour and 30 minute-film, which is not a done thing. They thought they will get away with that, but they didn't and I was very upset with the fact because I wrote its script and I knew if it has to be that long, then I need those 18 days of shoot because I needed the high points."

"The scale of the film was very big. So one hour and 55 minutes was a perfect length for it. Till the time it is interesting, it is fine, but the film has to hold (the audience)," he added.

Bigg Boss Season 6 Day 67 Synopsis Photo Gallery

The housemates wake up to the classic track - 'Mumbai se aaya mera dost'. Rajev is seen talking to Delnaaz and advices her to speak to Aashka so that she can clear the differences with Santosh. Delnaaz goes to the washroom and talks to Aashka, who in turn gets emotional and says that nobody in the house can be trusted. Aashka even points a finger at Delnaaz's diplomatic nature and how she doesn't stand up for her friends. Simultaneously, Santosh and Vishal are seen in the boys' room bitching about Aashka's fake behavior. After sometime when Aashka passes by and Santosh tells the boys that Aashka looks like a 'chudail' with her hair all opened up etc.

Sapna is called to the confession room by Bigg Boss asks her to choose two candidates for the coming week's captaincy. She chooses Delnaaz and Urvashi. She comes out of the confession room and informs both the candidates that they can start campaigning for the election. Later, Sana makes fun of Vishal for being on the stretcher and asks him what all he must be dying to do since the restriction in his movements. Vishal laughs and explains that he is quite upset with the punishment. Meanwhile, Imam comes out of the washroom with a mop in his hand. Sapna snaps at him immediately and tells him to place the mop back in the washroom as that mop is reserved only for cleaning the washroom and nowhere else. Imam listens to the captain's instructions but goes inside and bitches about her stubborn attitude to the camera.

Imam is called into the confession room by Bigg Boss. He is then asked to move the confession chair and enter the visitor's room via a small door. An astonished Imam enters the room and waits in front of the glass panel in anticipation. Imam's sister Farzana had come to visit him. Imam was overjoyed to see his elder sister and the siblings shared the happenings of inside and outside the house. Imam walked back into the confession room more delighted than ever. He couldn't help but to thank Bigg Boss for his kindness and generosity. After Imam goes back inside the house, Bigg Boss calls Rajev into the confession room. Rajev is sent to the visitors' room as well. Rajev's brother Rakesh Paul had come to visit him. The brothers were thrilled to see one another and couldn't help but get emotional as they had met each other after two long months. Rajev came back and thanked Bigg Boss for giving him such a wonderful opportunity.

Sana was called into the visitors' room to be unpleasantly surprised. She went in with a smile on her face but came out with a frown. In sometime, Bigg Boss assembled all the housemates in the living area and launched the Vodafone task for the evening. The task was to sit in the Vodafone booth and make one wish each that the housemates would like to fulfill amidst their stay in the Bigg Boss house. One by one all the housemates made their wishes to the camera. The housemates enjoy this task and get ready for bed after. The night comes to end on a light note as Urvashi tickles Sapna with a comb and tries to wake her up as the other housemates stare with eagerness. Sapna wakes up finally and all the housemates share a laugh and go to sleep.

Movie Rating : 'Neethaane En Ponvasantham' - when love is boring

Film : " Neethaane En Ponvasantham"
Actors : Jiiva, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Vidyullekha Raman and Santhanam
Director : Gautham Vasudev Menon
Rating : **

As promised during the promotion of the film, Gautham's " Neethaane En Ponvasantham" (NEP) could very well be anyone's love story. But, sadly, why will anyone want to revisit his or her love story if it's filled with fewer heartwarming moments and mostly egoistic clashes and blame games?

NEP definitely deserves some appreciation for successfully mirroring modern-day love-and-hate relationships. Sadly, though, it fails to engage the audience with its cliched presentation.

Varun and Nithya, played by Jiiva and Samantha respectively, have been extremely fond of each other since their school days. It begins as a juvenile love story, gradually growing into an unexplainable feeling coupled with strong emotions, and eventually paving the way for love.

However, Varun and Nithya keep parting and meeting at different junctures in life and still happen to share the same feelings. Will Varun and Nithya celebrate a happy ending or not: that's what the rest of the story is about.

Though the film justifies with valid reasons why Varun and Nithya part ways at regular intervals, it appears corny. In one particular scene, for example, Varun parts ways citing the urge to do an MBA, to only reunite with Nithya after few years. Ridiculous! If Menon wanted to tell his audience how hackneyed most relationships in reality are, then probably he may be right. But, who would want to pay money, spend a few hours and be told something so banal?

Thanks to Illayaraja's music, NEP keeps hope alive throughout and gives one the feeling of having watched a musical love story.

Jiiva and Samantha fit in their respective roles quite convincingly. Samantha's transformation from a school kid to an adult is a treat to watch despite at times being melodramatic, while Jiiva turns in an equally satisfying performance.

Santhanam and newcomer Vidyu succeed in providing some laughable moments. Of all the friends around Samantha, Vidyu has a stronger part to play and she pulls it off easily. Scenes between Santhanam and Jiiva are highly entertaining and help in engaging the audience.

The extended climax was annoying. Had the director shortened the climax by a good 10 to 15 minutes, people wouldn't be complaining.

" Neethaane En Ponvasantham" doesn't live up to the hype. I wonder what this film might have been, without Raja's music. Despite being mostly done to death, there are a few moments that one can look forward to in this film. To watch a film for a few memorable moments. Is that worth it?
